Convenience features preferred by British motorists
Convenience and comfort features were high up in a list of the technologies that British motorists say they can’t live without, research from eBay has found. They rank higher than Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
The study from eBay looked into attitudes towards in-car technologies among 2,000 British drivers. Parking sensors (37%) were rated the most essential piece of kit for UK drivers, ahead of USB ports (29%) and Bluetooth connectivity (29%). As one in three (31.7%) of the 36.1 million cars on the road in the UK are more than 12 years old, as many as 11.4 million drivers could be missing out on modern features, some of which can be easily retrofitted with a simple upgrade.
To demonstrate this, eBay bought and retrofitted a 2005 BMW 330Ci, fitting it with some of the convenience technologies that we find in newer models. These include upgraded in-car entertainment to include smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, blind spot warning, a reversing camera and front and rear integrated dashcams.
While passive technologies and in-car entertainment were ranked highly, active safety systems proved less popular. 38% of surveyed drivers found intervention from active avoidance technologies, including autonomous emergency braking and lane keep assist, to be “disconcerting.”
Some of the latest convenience and comfort, as well as safety technologies, account for a significant proportion of the price of new cars. But over half of drivers in the survey said that they have never used one or more of the advanced deiver assistance or infotainment features. Cruise control, lane keep assistance and lane departure prevention systems topped the list of shunned features.
