Santorini rattled by tremors

The Prime Minster of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has warned the residents of the island of Santorini to remain calm after the island was hit by increasing seismic activity. The warning came as schools were ordered to close on Monday, with authorities advising against large gatherings in enclosed spaces on the island.

Santorini is a popular tourist destination renowned for whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches.

Greek islands reported over 280 earthquakes over the past 48 hours, the University of Athens’ Seismological Laboratory said. Tremors measuring up to 4.9 in magnitude were recorded on Santorini while nearby reported quakes of 3.9 and 4.3 over recent days.

Speaking in Brussels from EU talks, the Mitsotakis said that Greece is working to deal with “a very intense geological phenomenon.” Authorities, he added, have been asked to give a “comprehensive presentation” of geological data, ensuring that everyone is aware of the scale of it.

The remarks come as many residents on the island spent Sunday night indoors, fearing potential damage to buildings in the event of an earthquake. Focal points of the tremors have been recorded at depths of just 2km or 1.2 miles below the surface.

A number of residents have opted to leave the island until the seismic activity comes to an end.
