Greenland’s Gold Rush: Untapped Mineral Wealth and Its Global Impact

Greenland’s untapped mineral wealth is drawing international attention, with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland emphasising its immense potential for rare earth elements and other critical resources. As the world’s largest island, Greenland is once again in the spotlight, with President Donald Trump renewing his interest in its vast mineral reserves. Trump’s administration recognises Greenland’s importance and has called for its “economic security” and “strategic advantage,” reigniting debates over the Arctic territory’s role in global resource supply and geopolitical strategy.
The interest stems from Greenland’s critical resources, including rare earth elements, gold, copper, and nickel, which are essential for advanced technologies like smartphones, electric vehicles, and renewable energy solutions. Trump recently commented that Greenland’s resources “represent the key to securing America’s industrial future,” renewing focus on the island’s potential to support Western supply chains currently reliant on China.

Mining Greenland: The Race for Resources
Amaroq Minerals, one of the leading companies operating in Greenland, has made significant strides in uncovering the island’s mineral wealth. Focusing primarily on gold, Amaroq is also exploring copper and nickel deposits in southern Greenland, a region believed to hold untapped reserves of critical materials.
Eldur Olafsson, the CEO of Amaroq Minerals, described Greenland as “one of the last uncharted mining frontiers with the potential to supply global demand for decades.” His company’s work includes refining ore into gold bars, but Olafsson is quick to point out that Greenland’s rare earth elements may be even more valuable in the long term.
The Trump administration has also expressed interest in Greenland’s rare earth elements, which are vital for manufacturing everything from wind turbines to defence equipment. By reducing reliance on China, Greenland offers the West a strategic opportunity to secure critical resources closer to home.
Strategic Challenges and Opportunities
Despite its potential, mining Greenland is no small feat. The harsh Arctic climate, limited infrastructure, and remote geography make operations expensive and logistically complex. Over 80% of Greenland is covered by ice, and most settlements lack road connections, increasing the cost of extracting and transporting resources.
Environmental concerns are another hurdle. Greenland’s government enforces strict regulations to protect its fragile ecosystem and ensure sustainable development. Naaja Nathanielsen, Greenland’s Minister for Business, Trade, and Raw Materials, has emphasised the importance of balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
“We want to be part of the solution for the climate crisis while leveraging our resources responsibly,” Nathanielsen stated.
President Trump’s renewed focus on Greenland, however, brings additional complexity. His administration’s strong interest in securing Greenland’s resources has intensified geopolitical competition, particularly as China continues to expand its influence in global mining.
Greenland and the Push for Independence
While Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, it has long sought economic independence. The island currently relies on a $600 million annual subsidy from Denmark, but mining could provide an alternative source of revenue.
Greenland’s government hopes that mining royalties will boost its economy and reduce dependence on Danish subsidies. However, progress has been slow. Currently, there are only two active mines on the island, with plans to develop three to five more in the next decade.
Javier Arnaut, head of Arctic Social Sciences at Greenland University, noted, “While mining is seen as key to independence, the challenges of infrastructure, climate, and investment mean progress will take time.”
