Earl’s Court changes coming
The Council has launched a consultation to help shape the future of Earl’s Court Road and is inviting residents and businesses to have their say actions that will help create a safer and cleaner Earl’s Court.
What is a local action plan?
Local action plans are not policy documents or legislation, but a continuously updated place-based framework with ideas for future improvements. The Earl’s Court Road Local Action Plan presents a collection of 20 projects including, a new £800,000 streetscape for Hogarth Road, introduction of shopfront guidance to help protect architectural heritage, improved waste collection, street cleansing and much more. Residents and businesses can submit their thoughts on these projects and ideas for future work.
Why is this needed?
“Our high streets are at the heart of our communities,” the council said in a press release, adding that they “should be celebrated for being places people enjoy. They are places for social exchange and entertainment, offering important services and shopping experiences, and for showcasing Kensington and Chelsea’s heritage, uniqueness, and culture.”
These ambitions, however, do not simply happen. It is vital that the Council and local communities act together to find solutions to improve the viability and vitality of town centres.
This has led the Council to look at the role it plays in helping to shape places, and facilitate a programme of support, innovation and change for our high streets.
Cllr Cem Kemahli, lead member planning and public realm said:
“Earl’s Court is an area with rich history and great potential. We’re determined to help the neighbourhood reclaim its former glory, starting with our investment in making Hogarth Road the front door to Earl’s Court, improving the street surface and planting beautiful new trees.
“Our Earls Court Local Action Plan shows the other ways we’d like to revitalise the area, putting it on the list of one of our amazing spaces. I encourage residents and businesses to share their views to help provide a solid foundation for future improvements and growth on Earl’s Court Road.”
What has already happened?
A Placemaking Framework which sets out the Council’s priorities for the former exhibition centre Opportunity Area was adopted by the Council in April 2023. The Council has supported a local business forum and is conducting BID feasibility research and scoping options. A Public Space Protection Order has been implemented and will be in place until April 2027. The streetscaping project on Hogarth Road began construction on Monday, 28th October, and is making good progress.
The Earl’s Court Road consultation is open until Monday, 18th November, and the link is available on the consultation website.
