Springfield Village celebrates completion of 54 council homes
Springfield Village in Tooting has marked a major milestone as the last brick is laid on 54 new supported living council homes. It is the latest development under the Homes for Wandsworth Programme.
Homes for Wandsworth will deliver over 1,000 new council homes in Tooting for rent, “tackling the housing shortage and providing local families in overcrowded or temporary accommodation the chance to move into a secure, permanent home,” according to Wandsworth council.
The homes in Springfield Village were celebrated at a ‘topping out’ ceremony, marking the final bricks laid out to complete the new development. 54 supported homes have been built, “helping vulnerable adults to live independently, including 21 which will be fully wheelchair accessible,” says the council.
The new homes benefit from “high-quality” amenities, and are built among the “sprawling” Springfield Park, the largest park opened in London since the 2012 Olympics. The new green space, the council says, “has been designed to support health, wellbeing and increase biodiversity,” and is also home to a pavilion café, play areas, trails, an amphitheatre, and informal sports areas.
The new community is constructed alongside Springfield University Hospital, being developed in partnership with the NHS. It is the latest phase led by London Square, a specialist property development firm focusing on the capital.
This is another milestone in the Homes for Wandsworth programme. The programme has recently celebrated its 500th completed home, marking the halfway point towards the council’s goal of 1,000 “high-quality” council homes.
It comes after a recent announcement of 200 council homes being built by Battersea Power Station in partnership with the council. “This milestone marks a significant step in tackling the housing crisis and creating mixed, balanced communities across the borough,” the council said.
