National service for women rejected by Swiss voters

Swiss voters have rejected a measure which would require women to undergo national service. Men currently are required to, either in the military, civil protection teams, or other forms. 84% of voters rejected the “citizen service initiative” and all of the 26 cantons voted significantly against. Proposals would need a majority of both cantons and voters to pass.

A separate proposal to impose a tax on individual donations or inheritances of over 50 million francs was also rejected by over 78% of voters. The revenue would have been used to tackle climate change and help Switzerland meet its net-zero goals by 2050.

Supporters of national service hoped that it would improve social cohesion, creating jobs in fields such as the environment, food security, and elderly care. But cost reasons were among the reasons lawmakers opposed it, as well as concerns that it could take many young people out of the workforce and harm the economy as a result.

Young Swiss men are already required to carry out military service or join civil protection teams. There are alternatives for conscientious objectors, and those who opt out are required to pay an exemption fee. Every year, 35,000 men join mandatory service.

The initiative would have made it a requirement for all citizens of the country. Women can do so on a voluntary basis, which includes areas outside the military. Supporters highlighted “landslides in the mountains, floods in the plains, cyberattacks, risks of energy shortages or war in Europe,” saying that the plan would allow everyone to take responsibility for “a stronger Switzerland that’s able to stand up to crises.”
