Japanese airline offers free domestic flights to UK and European visitors

In a bid to tackle overtourism in its popular cities, Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) and the country’s National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) is offering free domestic flights to all European and British travellers. The scheme will run until 31st January 2026. It has been introduced to ease crowding in places such as Kyoto and Tokyo and encourage travellers to visit some of the nation’s lesser-known locations.

It is part of a “Stopover & Add-on Free Fare” offer, allowing eligible economy passengers from Europe and the UK to book up to two free domestic flights on an international booking by 31st January, even if the flight departure is after that date.

This means that whether you plan on travelling to Tokyo or on to Hiroshima or the Izu Peninsula, you would pay the same fee. The Japanese Airline says it would allow travellers to create an itinerary for multiple stops at no additional cost.

There is a caveat. While the airfare will be free for the additional flight, taxes and fees would still apply the offer is also subject to availability and may not be available on all dates or all flights. Passengers can book the deal via travel agents or directly through ANA.

Popular Japanese destinations such as Tokyo and Kyoto are facing overtourism, with a record 36.9 million people visiting the country in 2024. Over 90% said that they wished to visit more areas in the country but fewer than a tenth did.
