Balloons close Lithuania airport
Vilnius Airport in the capital of Lithuania saw flights temporarily halted on Saturday, 29th November following suspected balloons entering the airport’s airspace. This, according to Reuters, is the “latest in a series of flight disruptions” that have affected the Baltic country.
European aviation has recently been “thrown into chaos,” the news site said, over drone sightings in recent months. These have resulted in temporary closures in Copenhagen and Brussels. Vilnius airport has faced at least ten closures since early October this year.
The government of the Baltic country has reported that weather balloons, being flown by smugglers, have been used to transport contraband such as cigarettes. It places the blame on the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, for allowing what it has referred to as a “hybrid attack.”
In October, Lithuania closed both crossing points on its border with Belarus following reports of balloons, only reopening them a week ago after the interruptions to its air traffic appear to have ended.
Belarussian president Lukashenko fired back. He described the closure of the border as a “crazy scam” and accused the West of fighting a hybrid war against hi country and Russia.
