Ski lift collapse in Spain leaves two women in intensive care

Two women are in intensive care after a ski lift at a Spanish resort collapsed, leaving others injured. The Astún resort in the Spanish Pyrenees was closed after rescue services arrived on the scene. It has since been reopened.

A failure in a pulley on the ski lift is thought to have caused a cable to become slack, causing some chairs to collapse to the ground. This threw skiers on board onto the snow. Authorities are currently investigating the situation, according to Spanish media reports. The resort stressed that it had “all the permits and inspections” in a statement.

Regional officials believed that around 30 had been hurt but the ski resort later said that around 15 were seriously injured. Local emergency services said that ten were taken to hospital while 20 others were discharged “on the spot.”

The two women injured were in the worst condition. The 18-year-olds were airlifted to a hospital in Zaragoza by helicopter, according to Spain’s state media. One has been described as stable while the other is under observation but is improving.

A pulley at one end of the ski lift loosened, causing part of the structure that supported it to collapse. This caused the cable to lose tension and several seats fell, state broadcaster TVE reported.

Dozens of people were left hanging on the 15m-high (50ft) ski lift and were aided in coming down.
