Piccadilly line trains: repairs close to completion
Passengers looking to use Piccadilly line trains should expect normal service to resume by the end of January as the repairs to its fleet of trains are nearing completion. The line had suffered from delays between trains with the line being closed between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge after heavy leaf fall.
Many Piccadilly line trains have been affected by “wheel flats” which can happen when the brakes are applied and the wheels slide. This causes wear.
60 trains are currently used the line, 15 fewer than the number it needs to run a full service. The Piccadilly line fleet has 86 trains.
Many of its trains are decades old and lack the “anti-slide” technology on their wheels. The line had been affected by many of the same issues since 2016. A lathe is needed to smooth out “wheel flats” which takes roughly a day per train.
A new fleet with improved braking technology is currently being tested and should enter service by the end of 2025.
