Google Street View helps Spanish police with murder case
A Google Street View image showing a man loading a large white plastic bag into the boot of a car has helped police in Spain with a murder case. The Google Street View car was recording images for the site in a northern Spanish town. The website allows users to see images and streets all over the world, filmed by cars mounted with cameras.
In this case, it appeared to capture the moment the body of the victim was allegedly being removed. Two people have been arrested last moth, accused of being responsible for a disappearance and murder of a man in October 2023. The dismembered remains were found last week in a cemetery.
This was the first time that a Google Street View car had visited Tajueco in the northern province of Soria in over a decade. Police say that another photo sequence shows the blurred silhouette of someone transporting a large white bundle with a wheelbarrow. But the images, police say, were not “decisive” for solving the case.
The victim, according to El Pais newspaper was a 33-year-old Cuban male who was reported missing in October 2023 when a relative had received text messages from the victim’s phone which he thought were suspicious. The relative informed police that the victim had met a woman, was leaving Spain, and was planning to get rid of his phone.
On the 12th of November 2024, a woman, believed to be the missing Cuban man’s partner, was arrested, along with a man, reportedly her ex-partner.
And earlier this month, a decomposed torso, believe to be the victim’s, was uncovered in a nearby cemetery. Those accused are in custody as the investigation continues.
