British Hostage Emily Damari Freed in Ceasefire Agreement

British hostage Emily Damari has described herself as “the happiest person in the world” following her release from captivity during a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. The 28-year-old, who was captured during the terror group’s surprise attack on 7th October 2023, endured unimaginable challenges. Her family called the battle for her release “ongoing torture.”

In an Instagram post, Emily expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of her family and friends. “Love, love, love,” she wrote. “I have returned to my beloved life.” Her heartfelt message included a triumphant “thank you, thank you, thank you,” adding that she is simply overjoyed to have her freedom restored.

Emily’s mother, Mandy, who grew up in Beckenham, south-east London, had been a tireless advocate for her daughter’s release. On Sunday, her efforts were rewarded when Emily was freed alongside two fellow hostages, Romi Gonen and Doron Steinbrecher.

Reflecting on the moment, Mandy shared her relief and joy. “Yesterday, I was finally able to give Emily the hug that I have been dreaming of,” she said, thanking everyone who supported their family during this ordeal. Mandy emphasised the resilience Emily showed, despite losing two fingers in the attack, and highlighted the importance of continuing efforts to free the remaining hostages.

Emily and the other released hostages are now recovering at Sheba Medical Centre in Tel Aviv, where they are in stable condition. Doctors will monitor them closely as they begin their physical and emotional recovery.

The ceasefire that facilitated their release began three hours later than planned due to delays from Hamas, which led to Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed 26 Palestinians. While the agreement brought relief for some families, many remain anxious for the release of 94 hostages still in captivity.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed his delight over Emily’s release. Speaking to BBC Radio 4, he recounted the personal connection he felt to her case. A yellow plastic flower gifted by Mandy, symbolising hope, had stayed in his office as a reminder. “I will move it from my office today and take it home,” he said emotionally.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer echoed the sentiment, calling the release “wonderful and long-overdue news after months of agony.”

The road ahead for the British hostage and others released remains uncertain, with some former hostages adapting quickly to freedom and others bearing long-term scars. 95 hostages are still to be released. Organisations like Amnesty International continue to highlight the importance of global efforts to secure the safe return of all hostages.
